  • ArtSEA: First visual arts show lifts off at Museum of Flight

    by Brangien Davis

The Museum of Flight has long been a home for spectacular design and creative vision. But this summer the 58-year-old institution is boldly going where it has never gone before — flying into the universe of visual art.

The expansive new show Art + Flight (June 10 - Jan. 7; with lots of special events on opening day) reveals the ripe potential of this new connection between the region’s aviation history and artistic vibrancy.

  • Kraken wear last of six ‘Hockey is for Everyone’ warmup jersey designs

    By Kate Shefte

The Kraken logo in use during Thursday’s warmups was inspired by that feeling one gets during a swim in the Pacific Ocean. When something slimy wraps itself around your leg — sudden, startling and off-putting.

It’s that ocean kelp, and also the moss that hangs from the trees in the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula. Earthy, but eerie.

“Anything that has an element of … not menacing, but the unknown. That’s what I’m trying to emulate,” Seattle born-and-raised artist Angelina Villalobos said.

  • Murky and Mysterious

    by Bob Condor

Kraken's second annual "Green Night" will feature familiar artist's Pacific-deep green hues in a seaweeds-turned-creature 'S' and a fluorescent-red look from ocean depths

Local artist and community engager Angelina "179" Villalobos was commissioned by the Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena organizations before either was officially named. A couple of years before any puck was dropped at center ice between the twin video boards, she painted a "giant wave" mural on the arena site's outer construction wall not far from the International Fountain on the Seattle Center campus.

‘There are so many elements of the Pacific Northwest culture that I pulled from to create vibrancy,’ said Villalobos.
