The theme for this art show is Saturday morning cartoons, you know, ones you'd watch climb out of bed and sit in front of the TV with a bowl of cereal for. One you memorized the theme song and sang along to quietly so not to wake the adults.Last year I did Lydia from the Beetlejuice Cartoon where I turned her into an open armed version of The Madonna. Being a girl who loved super heroes and battling evil, I remember watching He-Man with my brother and admiring The Sorceress. Later when She-Ra came out I fell in love. Finally, a chance to have a champion of my own, she had a sword, and a unicorn. Finally a her I could pretend to be when we played outside. But I always went back to the The Sorceress. What was her story? why was she so powerful and yet so powerless? I loved that she could transform into a hawk, but why did she have to stay in that castle? What about her made her so sad? This illustration hopes to process some of that. How we think of women in terms of mothers, caretakers, protecters. I have her hawk head dress adorned with feathers and metalwork. Her robes have chains and chainmail details. In the cartoon she wore simple robes but I chose to armor her slightly, like the Greek Goddess Athena. The hawk ended up turning more into an owl which also follows along the Athena theme so I'm not too mad about it. The roses are offerings, laid before her.Now Available at Statix Gallery in Pioneer Square.
